‘West Wing’ reunion special set at HBO Max
HBO Max has commissioned a special The West Wing reunion, bringing the cast and creators of the political drama back together for the first time in 17 years to raise awareness of the When We All Vote campaign.
A West Wing Special To Benefit When We All Vote will premiere on the streaming service this fall and feature a special theatrical stage presentation of the Hartsfield’s Landing episode from the show’s third season.
It is being produced by Casey Patterson Entertainment in association with Warner Horizon Unscripted Television. Show creator Aaron Sorkin will return to executive produce the production, alongside Patterson and Thomas Schlamme, who will also direct. Rob Paine is attached as co-executive producer.
The West Wing originally ran on US network NBC for seven seasons between 1999 and 2006 and followed the administration of fictitious US president Josiah Bartlet.
The creative team and cast organised this new production in order to raise awareness for and support When We All Vote, a non-profit, non-partisan organisation co-chaired by former US First Lady Michelle Obama, which was founded to increase participation in every election in the US and comes ahead of the next presidential election on 3 November.
Original cast members Rob Lowe, Dulé Hill, Allison Janney, Janel Moloney, Richard Schiff, Bradley Whitford and Martin Sheen will reprise their roles from the episode, alongside special guest appearances, including a message from Michelle Obama.
Sorkin commented: “Tommy and I are incredibly excited to be getting The West Wing cast back together for this staged reading and to support When We All Vote in their efforts to get all of us involved in this election.”
Sarah Aubrey, head of original content, HBO Max, addedL “With A West Wing Special To Benefit When We All Vote, we are excited to revisit this legendary series and offer our passionate fans something that is substantial, meaningful and unforgettable, while also promoting an important message for our time.”
